‘Tis the season for planting those gardens! As warm weather enriches us in Michigan, we hope you are feeling the lovely summer fresh air and sunshine as well. There is a wonderful feeling when stepping outside in the springtime and enjoying the growth and fruitfulness that the season has to offer. Whether a first time gardener or an avid green thumb, this spring can be the start of a bountiful summer/autumn with foods straight from the garden! Ginny Brown, wife of Amigo owner, Tim, spends her springtime preparing her own garden and helping with her community garden club, the Grosse Pointe Garden Center in Michigan. She has found, like many of us, that gardening is a therapeutic activity that keeps our minds and bodies active. We have worked together with Ginny to form a list of helpful tips to get outside and enjoy either your own backyard harvest or those within your local community: Construct an Accessible Garden An accessible garden uses concepts such as raised garden beds, modified tools, and wider pathways to achieve both accessibility and functionality. The ultimate goal is to have a garden that can be enjoyed by everyone! https://www.myamigo.com/creating-an-accessible-raised-garden/ Start Small If you are just starting in gardening or want to downsize, a few small plants on a porch or patio may be just the answer! Herb gardens allow for fresh pops of flavor to homemade dishes and a tomato plant produces dozens of tasty fruits to watch grow and enjoy. Get involved in the community Many communities now have local gardens or gardening clubs. This is a great way to enjoy fresh produce without tending to it yourself. https://gardenclub.org/find-club Get creative with meals to use produce in peak season Zucchini plants are famous for bringing extra guests to the party. To prevent extra fruits from spoiling, look in advance for fun recipes to try! Whether it be a yellow squash noodle, a cucumber tomato salad or a zucchini muffin, many exciting dishes await your summer.
