A young Al Thieme (pronounced tee-mee) was working as a plumbing and heating contractor in Bridgeport, Michigan in the late 1960s when a member of his family began to lose mobility due to multiple sclerosis. At that time there were limited personal mobility assistive devices. Al knew there had to be a better way.
He worked in the evenings in his garage to construct a vehicle that would allow people to maintain their independence. He invented the “Amigo” – the first power operated vehicle (POV)/mobility scooter. Named for being such a friend to people who used it, the Amigo became the first product of a new industry.
Amigo Mobility International was founded in 1968 with the mission of Improving Lives Through Mobility®. Since then Amigo Mobility has grown to include three product lines – Healthcare, Grocery & Retail and Material Handling – providing innovative solutions to meet the needs of diverse markets.
Amigo Mobility’s commitment to family runs deep. For over 50 years, Amigo Mobility has been a family owned and operated business. Currently Al Thieme, along with his wife, Beth Thieme (CEO); daughter, Jennifer Thieme Kehres (Director of of Business Development); and son, Jordan Thieme (Director of Operations), oversee company functions and daily operations.
