"Two" Much Fun

Friendly Wheels, Issue 27
May 2010

Twin sisters, Jill and Joy Procida, are loyal Amigo owners living full and fun-filled lives. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, they reside there, still, in a small city called Jeannette ... Jill and Joy in Jeannette (a bit of word humor!)

The twins were both diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy at the age of seven and were able to walk until after high school before entering Seton Hill University. At that point they discovered Amigo. The first of their five or six models (they've forgotten just how many) was the little yellow Front Drive Amigo. As time passed, their busy lives required a fuller range of mobility resulting in their selections of the Amigo RDs, which they've had ever since.

altRecently, I began to notice subtle but distinctive changes in a good friend of mine. Kathie is my very tolerant watercolors' instructor, 70+ years old, and sharp as a tack. She is more than fun and attends Curves on a regular basis. Seeing her clothes drape her frame in a more flattering fit and her eyes sparkle and complexion glow, I asked her what she was up to.

Her immediate response was brief and to the point, "Yoga. You need to try it." While I haven't yet, the benefits are outwardly and inwardly (as you'll read below) apparent.

My husband, Dave, and I LOVE to get away for a vacation, but leaving the comforts and accessibility of home means thinking about the logistics of getting me (in my 3-wheeled Amigo POV/scooter, along with our luggage) through security and on to a plane. This can be somewhat stressful. For people who are experiencing limitations of any kind, traveling today can be very difficult.  As my 86 year-old mother says, "the spirit is willing, but the body has other plans."

altAre you looking to buy a mobility aid for yourself or a loved one in the future? There has been an abundance of Medicare fraud over the past few years. Therefore, it is important for people to research a company and its products before making the best mobility selection to suit their needs.

The Web site stopmedicarefraud.gov by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Justice has tips for working with a reputable and trustworthy company. The site recommends to "Be suspicious of anyone who offers you free medical equipment or services and then requests your Medicare number."
