Making Holiday Shopping Easier

Friendly Wheels, Issue 34

By: Shelley Peterman Schwarz (30 year Amigo owner)

Shelley P. SchwarzHaving multiple sclerosis (MS) for 30 years has given me many opportunities to learn shortcuts that make my life easier. Here are a few of the tips and techniques I use to save time and energy so I am able to enjoy the holidays. (But don't add to your stress by thinking you have to try all of them!)

GIVE GIFT CERTIFICATES: Try gift certificates from specialty stores or sporting good suppliers, for instance. Can't buy them online? Go to a shopping mall where they're good for any store. Most big-box stores also offer gift cards to put toward the cost of a higher-priced item.

Featuring Amigo owner Phillippa Eckert

Phillippa Eckert 2

Retired residents at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Fla. are enjoying a musical treat these days. Amigo owner Phillippa Eckert is tickling those ivories along with a few other musicians. The volunteer band performed at Fleet Landing's Summer Follies program to a crowd of residents who gave them a standing ovation!

At eighty-four years young, Phillippa is experiencing the effects of post-polio syndrome. Now, only able to stand "just under a minute," she has three Amigos. As a tax preparer in 1993, her first Amigo served as her desk chair. By 2000, Phillippa's physician recommended the compact Amigo RT Express to use inside her home. In 2007, the Amigo RD took her "outside" and, today, she is fully independent and happily mobile.

Accessible Homes by Lowe's

Lowe's Universal DesignBarb, an Amigo owner, and her husband, Larry, both use mobility aids. A recent article, "Universal Appeal," in Lowe's Creative Ideas' May/June 2010 issue, their living arrangements in the home of son, Curtis, and his family are featured. Using the principles of Universal Design (UD), Lowe's Creative Ideas team designed an accessible home addition complete with kitchen, bath, bedroom, and living room for a multi-generational household.

Universal Design is the structuring of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. (Courtesy of the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University.)

"Two" Much Fun

Twin sisters, Jill and Joy Procida, are loyal Amigo owners living full and fun-filled lives. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, they reside there, still, in a small city called Jeannette ... Jill and Joy in Jeannette (a bit of word humor!)

The twins were both diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy at the age of seven and were able to walk until after high school before entering Seton Hill University. At that point they discovered Amigo. The first of their five or six models (they've forgotten just how many) was the little yellow Front Drive Amigo. As time passed, their busy lives required a fuller range of mobility resulting in their selections of the Amigo RDs, which they've had ever since.

Yoga-cize in 2010!

altRecently, I began to notice subtle but distinctive changes in a good friend of mine. Kathie is my very tolerant watercolors' instructor, 70+ years old, and sharp as a tack. She is more than fun and attends Curves on a regular basis. Seeing her clothes drape her frame in a more flattering fit and her eyes sparkle and complexion glow, I asked her what she was up to.

Her immediate response was brief and to the point, "Yoga. You need to try it." While I haven't yet, the benefits are outwardly and inwardly (as you'll read below) apparent.
